Lanceley, Colin (1938– ).

Australian painter and sculptor. He was born in Dunedin, New Zealand, and moved to Australia as a child in 1940. After studying at East Sydney Technical College and the National Art School, Sydney (his teachers included Olsen and Passmore), he went to Italy on a travelling scholarship in 1965, then settled in London until 1981, when he returned to Sydney. In the early 1960s he became the leading Australian exponent of Pop art; later his style became more abstract. His work has often included three-dimensional elements, including found objects: ‘I work in an area between painting and sculpture, combining both painted and sculpted images, in order to create an ambiguous space in front of the picture surface.’
